(Temporary Backup) The abyss of unexpected costs

I’m not sure if the unexpected cost is particular to the South African context, I suspect not. But living amoung the so called privileged in a country without sufficient social welfare, mean the threat of falling form middle class to impoverishment is ever present. Particularly when faced with additional and unforeseen additional and urgent costs. This week alone, has seen a plumbing bill, a doctors bill and required medication and a additional and unexplained fee from the university where I work and study. That aside my situation is far from unique, and if fact my privilege extend only so far as to mean an unexpected cost is not will not mean one becomes destitute.

Compared only to the required cost of living in Johanesburg. One is amazed anyone is able to move from empovirished situation to even a working class level of comfort in South Africa, when even one small uncovered cost might leave a person potentially destitute. Or at lease in need to seeking out the many r500/ month accommodations offered within our fair city. Continuing the cycle of poverty, for generations to come.
